but for now i wanted to post an image that I did back in highschool (I think either freshman or sophomore year?) which i still consider to be the best piece I've done. I jokingly say all the time that going to art school has completely ravaged my creativity and forced me into methods that are stifling....but i kinda do believe it.
I mean, dont get me wrong, art classes have given me a whole new world of opportunities by building my technical skills, but i always feel like something was lost. I always feel too confined, and always comparing my style to those of professionals...
oh well. I guess you just need to fight through that feeling sometimes.
Anyways, i had a dream about this image and when I woke up I was like "i have to draw this..."
So i used a tree branch and a bottle of ink. No planning, no sketches, no comps, just dove in. THATS what i miss.
man this is a strong drawing, totally agree with you on the art school killing your shit. Get a bigger picture up if you have one though, it would be nice to see the line quality better!
ReplyDeletethanks stuart, unfortunately this is the only copy i have that i could find on google since the original is back home and i dont have a better scan here
ReplyDeleteI like the splatter a lot, the fact that you used a tree branch is amazing. Such a good idea, your stuff always inspires me.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Carolyn!
ReplyDeleteHey, I remember this! We published it in the magazine, and it was the back of the official postcard that went out for that art awards ceremony. I always loved it.
ReplyDeletePS- I bought that one shirt with the whale and the bombs on it, and got asked about it today, which meant I got to explain about how I know this awesome artist! There was jealousy... :)
