Jack Frost

Did an illustration for ArtOrder of my interpretation of Jack Frost.
I ended up using a slightly different process for this piece than what I usually do and I really like the way it turned out in terms of the color. I wanna try messing with this method some more and see what comes out of it.
Graphite on Stonehenge and digital color.

Also, I had an AWESOME time in NYC last weekend and met a bunch of great people. I couldn't be more excited to get done with school and move up there next year. Bottom image is a sketch from my trip.
OH, and happy 100th post!!! Thank you, always, for all the love & comments.

  4. God, this blog is invaluable for an illustration student :) I hope to one day be a 10th as good - and successful. Gah, now I'm all jealous.
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the amount of competition in the field? And how do you combat this. I draw because I love to, and I can't get my head around having to market paintings/sketches as a product. xx

  5. I mean, being a student, i really like to share what's going on with some of my attempts at building my portfolio, cause i figure others might use it as a resource too, and im glad that I can be of some help to at least one person! :] and thank you.
I think the majority of the people that do art got into it because it's just what they love. I couldnt imagine never being able to draw again...
But when it comes to competition, yeah, i usually get overly-hard on myself and bum myself out just by comparing my own work to the best of the bests. However, you've really got to get that to push you. I try and blur the line as much as I can between focusing on making myself better as an artist and just doing it because its what I love. Use that competition to say to yourself "yea, damn, i need to get off the couch and paint this week" but dont frustrate yourself. Keep in mind that no matter what, if you spend time drawing, youll get better. period. so no matter what youre doing, either sketching or final pieces, just KNOW that youre getting better. People who let the overwhelming get to them too much are the ones that stop. So i guess dont really focus on your art as a product right now, just keep building it until you feel comfortable with what you have, and then put it out there. Hard work gets noticed.
