I spent a few days in NYC this week and explored the city for the hell of it. If you get the chance to go to SoHo, you REALLY need to check out the Evolution store. It was awesome and I cant believe I didnt know about it until now! Here are some of the sketches that came out of the trip. Im also getting a new computer so i can stop working on my tiny 15" screen on my 4 year old macbook :]

flaunt

I was able to fit in a personal piece between commissions and here it is.
My idea behind it was based around vulnerability. When beauty is created, it always starts out the same; as an irritation caused by something so miniscule. Over time it builds and builds. At some point, shell is tossed away and the soft insides are just devoured whole. Forgotten. But the pearl that was created is flaunted without any regard for the remains of what made it in the first place.

Waxwing

This is the final piece for the album I've been working on. I'm really happy with the outcome and was excited to use an idea ive been wanting to materialize for a while now and it seemed to fit the theme of self-destruction. Its done in pencil, gouache, and chalk on BFK Rives.

my week

i wanted to dedicate this post to the week I've had.
I found out two days ago that I received the award of an all-expenses paid trip to IlluXCon this November in PA. I. Am. So. Excited. For those that don't know, IlluXCon is a small fantasy illustration convention (only about 400 are admitted) that spans for 4 days, packed full of some of the top fantasy illustrators in the field showing off their work, doing demos, and interacting with students....like me! I am super honored to have been one of the students chosen through the IlluXCon scholarship program, but I'm even more excited to attend and actually MEET some of the coolest artists and art director's in the business. I send my thanks to Patrick Wilshire and of course, Jon Schindehette, to whom this would not have been possible.

In other news, I went to a lecture this week at the Corcoran given by the legend, Chuck Close. I really enjoyed hearing what he had to say about his work. It had been a rough art week for me the week before, and finding out that Chuck went through some of the same issues i struggle with in terms of style really gave me a boost to my confidence. And despite everything, the man was funny as hell.
